Why NO WOMAN Should Fear Words (or, What is Beauty?)

Be sure and check out our GIVEAWAY while you're here.

Last night I shared on the LittleOwlCrunchyMomma Facebook page that I was very nervous about the airing of The Doctors TV Show that I was a part because I haven't washed my hair with shampoo in five years...

I realize that I need to explain something.

I am not nervous about how people will perceive me. I am not nervous about making a fool of myself. I am not even nervous about whether or not people with think I have ugly hair.....

This is about something much bigger.

In many ways the very title of this show stands directly against everything I hold dear. The very idea that a woman should "fear words" like "bad butt", "bad boobs", "bad hair"... makes me sick to my stomach.

Is this really what we care about as a culture? At the end of the day, is this what we stand for as a society? Is this what we are comfortable with our young girls seeing and believing? That every woman has parts of her body that she should be ashamed of because other people find them unattractive?

Is this what BEAUTY means?

What lengths will we go to fit somebody else's idea of beauty? How much will we cut, poke, paint, and reshape our bodies until we think we have done enough?

Why are we so afraid of stretching, of sagging, of changing as we travel this road called life? Why are we so afraid of embracing the uniqueness of our stories and the vessels that we live them through?

Love your body. It has given you so much.

Love yourself. You are beautiful.

Think of how much better the world would be, if rather than focusing on our physical "imperfections", we focused on what our strong bodies, strong minds, and strong spirits are capable of?

Women, will you join with me? Will you promise that from today forward you will STRIVE, above all, to love yourself - to love and respect your TRUE BEAUTY - inside and out.

  3. Dear Jacquelyn:
I knew about you because of that type of people that you are describing as negative. I attracted you, they were a channel. Thanks to you and to the way they reacted, I feel so assured about trying what you have done. I do not do it because I fear any ingredients at all, nonetheless your experience serves people like me even with different points of view. Isn't that beautiful? As long as you keep your attention on those alike and what you want, controversy will be out of the equation. I do appreciate what you have done and believe it works. I want it to work for me too. I have curly abundant but very thing hair. I started not using shampoo this last Friday, but find I have to rinse it to untangled it every day. Should I keep doing so most of the time until it adjusts? :) I wish you the very best!!!! Thank you for being brave!

  4. I saw the two videos of the Today show and was so angry at what those ignorant reporters said. I couldn't believe that these well-educated people who are responsible for educating the masses could not even take the time to read up on alternative haircare methods. I thank naturallycurly.com for helping me learn how to care for my hair and writing an article about the report concerning you. And I thank you for being true to yourself and for helping me become even more proud of who I am.

    1. Thanks Natali! NaturallyCurly.com has been around a lot longer than me, too. The whole thing is just kind or hilarious. I have friends who have been doing it for a LOT longer than me. :)

  5. That Elisabeth Kubler-Ross quote is something else- I pinned it! I'm excited about my no-poo adventure. I've tried baking soda/ACV a few times. While my hair seems to do well with it, my default is to get lazy and revert back to what's in the shower- hubby's shampoo. But I don't like it. Reading about you has given me the courage to try water washing. I'm 2 weeks in and my hair is going through a transition...but nothing a few more days of ponytails can't fix :) I'm excited to browse the blog and find some tips for myself!
